There is so much research out now that tells us how important our mental outlook is when it comes to healing our body.
A positive attitude is a state of being and a way of thinking that has multiple health benefits.
The brain’s ability to change with repetition, called neuroplasticity, gives it the capacity to change over time. Neuroscience studies have shown that repetitive movement or behaviors grow brain matter, regardless of age. This also involves positive thinking: the more consistent positive thoughts, the more brain neurons change chemical signals, altering the structure and function of the brain associated with positive behavioral changes and healing. These changes can be positive or negative depending on the consistency of behaviors, and messages we tell ourselves. The brain changes can go either way.
It is important not to worry about what was, but instead focus on what you can do right now. Mark each incremental step in the healing process. Keeping a positive attitude and imagine a full recovery helps support the body during your healing journey.
Research shows that a positive attitude can heal the mind and body.
- Helps reduce the effects of stress, so that you can manage stress instead of feeling overwhelmed.
- Can boost the immune system, which helps fight illness and improves cardiovascular health.
- Improves the moment or situation.
- Creates an opportunity to see a greater purpose in the experience and gain wisdom.
- Increases resilience.
- Sends positive messages to the body, promoting healing.
Positive thoughts reinforce a positive attitude. As a positive attitude grows, so do positive thoughts that change and alter the brain through neuroplasticity, bringing healthy change to the mind and body.
People often come in for therapy frustrated by their pain and the difficulty getting the help they need. I hear the words “this isn’t going to work for me…. it’s not going to help.” That belief and those self-messages make it difficult to succeed and recover. Not to mention, if you have tried therapy before and it didn’t help, maybe a different approach like we provide at Bayview Physical Therapy will make the difference needed.
